Gated Reverb - A Blast From The Past

Remember 80's music? I sure do, even if the 1970's was probably the zenith of my infatuation with popular music. There was a kind of drum sound that came about in one of those happy accidents during a recording session that gave way to a recording effect known as "gated reverb". This gives a very punchy and distinctive sound that you will recognize when you hear it.
This gated reverb sound drove quite a bit of popular music in the 1980, and indeed after being done to death in that decade, it is making something of a comeback. We have the advantage now of being able to generate this effect digitally, instead of the physical effects that had originally been used - much more convenient.
Below is a short video that gives a fond and semi-technical look at gated reverb, with some good examples to listen to.

Do We Really Need A Boba Fett Movie?

I sometimes wish I could listen in to one of those Hollywood meetings where they decide which movie concepts they are going to pursue; I'm really curious to know if there is actual thought and research going on, or if it's just "flinging stuff against the wall to see what will stick".
I kind of suspect the latter, and I further suspect that the reason some of the ideas stick is simply that they have the consistency of a dog turd.
Star Wars is a hot property (even after 50 years), but I think the powers that be need to be a little careful going forward. The latest buzz - other than the possible problems with the Han Solo movie - is a possible Obi-Wan movie, and maybe even a Boba Fett movie and (gasp) a Jabba The Huttmovie.

My Mac Attack

My day job is working on a Helpdesk. In our company, we have a few users who apparently insist on using Apple Mac computers in a overwhelmingly Windows environment. Being a diligent employee and all-around good guy, I decided to see if I could find a way to get some "hands on" with a Mac, to help with those occasions where I have to assist one of our Mac users.
To be completely honest, I should admit that our Mac users know much more about their systems than the vast majority of our Windows users . . .
Anyway, a local computer chain was selling some old Mac laptops at a bargain price, so I bit the bullet and purchased one. It's one of the old white, shiny plastic Intel MacBooks and is running OS X 10.6.8 [Snow Leopard]. Apple users will now be chuckling, no doubt, as what I have purchased is a 10-year-old laptop essentially running the Apple equivalent of Windows XP.

The Porgs Have Me Worried

A new selection of Star Wars - The Last Jedi photos are out in Entertainment Weekly, and the new "Porg" characters have me a bit worried. From what I gather, the little creatures will be mostly practical effects (a general "yay" for that), but are so stupid cute they make Ewoks look like mangy junk yard dogs.
I know I am going to be sick of seeing shelves of Porgs this Christmas in the stores. I get it; you make a lot of money off toy tie-ins, and cute stuff is a magnet for the young 'uns, but it seems awfully heavy handed - even if the Porgs in the movie turn out to be mean little buggers in action.
I mean, just look at it . . .

3 Reasons Why Alfred Is Talking To Superman, Not A Green Lantern

I don't often comment on stuff like this, but it seems painfully obvious to me that Alfred Pennyworth is startled by Superman at the end of the latestJustice League Comic Con trailer. A lot of folks are straining to make it seem that it is one of the Green Lanterns that show up, but I feel that is an attempt to get clicks more that anything else - there is very little "proof" of that from what I have seen.
Batman's butler and aide-de-camp, Alfred, is surprised by a visitor that we never see in the short scene. In the second part of the scene, we appear to be viewing Alfred from over the shoulder of the mysterious guest.
My thinking is as follows:
1 - We already know that the apparently dead Kal El (Superman) will come back in this story, in some capacity, and we briefly see Bruce Wayne/Batman looking at a holographic image with blue leggings and a red cape.
2 - Alfred, although startled, appears to recognize the intruder/visitor and pointedly uses the word "hop…
