With a couple of high profile suicides in the last few days, namely chef and writer Anthony Bourdain and designer Kate Spade, it should be a reminder to us (if one is needed) that suicide is a very permanent "solution", one that can cause quite a bit of collateral damage.
We can't know what personal demons or agonies others may wrestle with, and how they eventually come to that fateful decision to end their life - but it happens, and it's increasingly not a rare event.
Nearly 45,000 Americans committed suicide in 2016, more than the number lost to either auto accidents or opioid overdoses. That's up around 30% from 1999's figures.
For immediate help if you are in a crisis, in the US call the toll-free National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All calls are confidential.
